What a fabulous family holiday home! What a fabulous family holiday home! We were fortunate to stay in Akwaba in late September and loved it. Our children at the time were 4, 2 and 5 months. Akwaba had everything we could possibly need and want on our holiday -fantastic kitchen, plenty of living space indoor and out and a stunning swimming pool. Toys and DVDs for the kids were plentiful, not to mention a home cinema with plenty of choice for the adults as well. Abundant lavender and rosemary in the garden. All this set in picturesque provence. We thoroughly enjoyed our daily trips to local markets in the surrounding area. Olives, cheese, fresh fruit and veggies. Local goat's cheese was a favourite. We would love to return in the future but would stay longer next time!" Alex and Frank BannonWhat Wendy thinks… This is a large airy modern home with a large garden for children to be in without any worries – there's also an enclosed pool & lots of places to play hide & seek.
A separate playroom can keep the little ones from under your feet while you prepare a meal in the ultra-modern kitchen. You’ll find lots of space inside & out for two families to holiday together and then to escape to some peace & quiet alone if they want.
Inside You enter into the kitchen, living & dining room through French windows from the Olive tree shaded terrace. This open living area has a double height ceiling and air conditioning.
The kitchen has a dishwasher, steam oven, microwave, induction hob and oversize cupboards which the owner is happy to stock for you for your stay. The kitchen in this house really is for foodies who love to cook together, especially after a trip to the nearby organic market (there is even a stone pizza oven & BBQ outside). There is purified water in the kitchen and showers and the owner herself only uses organic foods, which she will leave in the cupboard for guests’ use. She has lots of recommendations of organic food shops and restaurants which she'll be pleased to pass on to you. There is a double bedroom on the ground floor adjoining the home cinema room (British TV and HD) and hundreds of adult & kid's DVDs and a sofa bed. There is also a WC on the ground floor. A utility room houses the washing machine. There is also a second kitchen which can be used as an arts and crafts room.
The first thing you find on the first floor is a mezzanine which is the kid's playroom with English TV & lots of toys and books for all ages. The landing area has shelves with lots of books for the adults to borrow.
The master double bedroom has a walk in dressing room and en-suite shower room (no WC) and there is lots of space for a cot. There are 2 further double bedrooms, one of which is en-suite and 2 queen size single rooms. There is also a separate bathroom & separate WC just off the landing. In total there are 4 doubles, 2 singles and a room with a sofa bed (a curtain separates the two rooms). All the bedrooms have mosquito blinds.
2 hours of cleaning a day and end of stay cleaning are included.
Outside You’ll find a large enclosed garden (with electric gate and garden lighting) which is totally private and has views to the 15th century village centre and is full of olive trees with low branches which are ideal for little ones to climb on.
An adult can keep an eye on the kids in the play area from either the swinging tree hammock or the more sophisticated terrace next to the house. There is a further shady terrace under an Olive tree with French doors straight into the kitchen and dining room.
The enclosed pool has a meter square first step which is ideal to sit on to read in the water, or for little ones to play on, then more stone steps down into the pool. The pool house is shady and has two day beds with dozens of cushions, a CD player and swimming towels and books. There is also a cosy play den. There is very much a luxurious, decadent feel to this room.
The house has a wrap-around terrace with two different sitting areas next to the kitchen and living area and there are plenty of other nooks to sit and read in, both in the house and garden. A third terrace has a stone BBQ with a pizza oven which overlooks the Yurt (a big Mongolian tent) which is situated at the bottom of the garden and is used for quiet adult moments, yoga and meditation. The other side of the garden has a Wendy house, swing, sandpit, lots of outside toys and blow up pool toys along with a swinging hammock for adult supervision. The rest of the garden is large and open, mostly grass and olive trees. Finally, there is a wilder area for adventures and wildlife spotting. Well behaved dogs are allowed.
Parent Points: On the terrace next to the brown furniture (to the side of the living room) there are 4 stone steps which cannot be gated.
Baby and Toddler Friendly: • Enclosed swimming pools (adult and blow up toddler pool and toys) • Enclosed grounds • Lots of low trees that are great to climb • Sand pit • Wendy House • Stairgates • Cots (x4) and cot linen • Baby monitor • Microwave • High chairs (x3) • Booster seats (x2) • Plastic plates, cups and cutlery • Potty • Steps • Changing mat • Sit on cars with wheels to zoom around the house on (big enough for adults too!) • Bath toys For the children… There is a separate playroom on the mezzanine above the living area with a TV (if you can't see them you will be able to hear them!). There are lots of toys for all ages, books, DVDs and Princess Castle tent. In the pool room, there is a den bed for afternoon snoozes.
Babysitting and live in or out au-pair available with notice (English speaking depending on school holidays). A marquee style tent is now also available to provide a shady play area ion the garden in hot weather. There is a covered table tennis table which can be wheeled outside if required.
And Beyond… The property is situated just outside the old part of the village and 400m or so walk to the centre with its shops, bar and restaurant. There really is a market on every day somewhere near this villa, selling everything from Provençal fabrics & pottery to marinated olives for your aperitif.
Further afield, how about kayaking down the Gorge de Verdon or even white water rafting? Here you can hike, climb, go canyoning - even gliding and para-gliding - or just sit sedately on the lake beach there.
Avignon is 90kms away and you shouldn’t miss a trip to see the Palais des Papes and the dozen or so museums and galleries and the opera house. Sit and have a coffee while the kids have a go on the old fashioned carousel. Ditto Nimes. You can't miss a trip to Roman Nimes – look out for its impressive arena and Maison Carre and Carre d'Art and the Jardin des Fontaines.
Take a trip to Aix en Provence to see Cezanne's studio and have a stroll through the lovely back streets. For the mums, Manosque, just down the road, is the home of l'Occitane the fragrance company – and there's a factory shop! Bike rides are sign posted from the centre of the village across the Luberon and there are lots of walks that can be made from the house, through the vines and the sunflowers.
Local beauty or remedial treatments can be booked for you with notice. Horse riding lessons can be booked nearby too. Before booking, please read about Realistic Expectations. You should also read our Terms and Conditions.
