What we think...
Lake Cottages is a charming collection of three newly renovated cottages situated around a pretty central garden.

The cottages have been renovated to a high standard providing you with all the amenities you would expect to find in a modern home but placed within a traditional setting.

The extensive grounds are home to lots of child friendly play equipment, like a trampoline, swings and slides and lots of other activities.  There is space here to keep to yourselves in your own private patio area or join the other guests for one of the communal BBQ evenings provided by award winning restaurateurs Anna and Simon.

Inside
Bluebell is a charming single story cottage set at right angles to the other two cottages.

Entry to the cottage is through an old wooden door to the cosy open plan living/dining/kitchen area, complete with log burner and large sofas, a perfect place to stop and enjoy the peace and quiet even catch up on a DVD or two from the collection.  This is a 2 bedroom cottage both with ensuite facilities; one double and one triple both big enough to accommodate a cot.  The double has large patio doors overlooking the centre of the property and its pretty pond.

Outside
Outside bluebell to the rear is a pretty gravelled private patio/dining area which overlooks the large communal garden area, lots of trees and plenty of space to play in the shade.  Having a BBQ with a glass of the local Pineau de Charente is a highly recommended way to unwind and relax.

Just around the corner is the enclosed solar heated pool (open May - Sept), the area is surrounded by raised decking especially to keep bumped heads to a minimum.  Beside the pool there is a shady spot for a paddling pool, so take a good book, a sunlounger and some water toys and voila a perfect afternoon enjoying the sun and tranquillity.

Surrounding the whole property are extensive grounds with lots of trees and shady spots to put a chair and enjoy the laughter and chatter of the children playing together on the many pieces of play equipment dotted around the gardens.

Parent Points: Although the grounds are completely enclosed parents must be aware that the enclosure in many places is a thick hedge which a very determined small person could squeeze through and as the name suggests there is a lake on the other side of the hedge.

And Beyond...
Lake Cottages as its name suggests is placed right on the edge of a very pretty lake providing lots of beautiful walks and cycling straight from the property, perhaps taking a picnic with you giving you time to enjoy the wonderful flora and fauna.  There are over 1,000km of cycle paths available to you, enough to keep even the keenest enthusiast busy.

After a gentle stroll, the local village will provide you with its own patisserie, cafebar, hairdresser and usual local amenities.  A quick trip in the car will take you to additional villages where you can find everything from local markets to the larger supermarkets.  Poitiers is just 30 minutes away and is a wonderful city with historic streets, bustling shops and plenty of cafe culture bursting with opportunities to stop and watch the world go past.

For something a bit different, the local village of Vasles is a "Mouton Village". Twenty-three breeds of sheep from all over the world inhabit a recreation of their natural surroundings amidst 15 acres of wooded parkland.  Nicholas and his grandfather the shepherd accompany you on a self-guided audio tour (available in English), and entertain you with tales and songs of traditional sheep farming.  There are demonstrations of sheepdog trials, wool carding, spinning and weaving and lamb feeding for children.

If your holiday isn't complete with out some sand and a bucket and spade you have several choices with the lake beach only 20 minutes away or the wonderful child friendly coastal beaches in and around La Rochelle which is about an hour and a half away.  La Rochelle is also a wonderful costal resort offering a traditional French seaside experience and Europe's largest aquarium.

If animal watching is popular with your children then there are also a variety of animal parks near by, such as La Vallee des Cerfs, with deer, horses, ponies and other farm animals.  Horse riding is available here.  Vallee des Singes is one of the most popular attractions with over 300 monkeys living free in the woodland, not a cage in site, as a clever use of water, moats and islands keep the monkeys at bay.  If you want to go a little more ferocious then there is always La Planete des Crocodiles - keep those fingers hidden!
