What Claire thinks...
There is everything you could possibly need for a safe and relaxing family holiday at Blackcurrant. Sandra has thought of everything, from the ‘no cars in the courtyard' during the week rule, allowing children to play safely in the central grassed play area, to the heated, enclosed pool, toddler pool and covered play barn to the bright, fresh, welcoming decor inside the property. Within easy reach with a 3 wheeler buggy are forest activities and walks, the facilities of the local village and many restaurants, beaches and other activities are within a short drive. All the properties at the Steadings are beautifully and neutrally decorated. The owners have maintained many of the original features such as beams and stonework whilst equipping them with all mod cons. Blackcurrant also has its own private, enclosed garden as it is set slightly away from the other properties in the main courtyard.
Inside
The front door of Blackcurrant leads into the open plan living and dining area, with the open plan kitchen to the left. A large window looks out from the kitchen across the drive and onto open fields and there is a table and chairs for 4 people. A door leads from the kitchen into a small hallway and then into the downstairs loo and the bathroom. The bath has a shower attachment tap for easier bath times.
The lovely light living area has windows on two sides, facing across the drive and fields on one side the private enclosed garden on the other. Comfortable sofas and TV/DVD are provided, as well as a box of toys in each property. The staircase (gated bottom and top) leads up from the dining area to the first floor. At the top of the stairs, there is a double bedroom to the left, with a window facing over the fields. To the right is a twin bedroom which also faces onto fields and has a chest of drawers which converts to a changing table. There is also a cot with a drop down side in this bedroom but it can be moved into the double bedroom if required. Facing the top of the stairs is an upstairs loo. Parent Points: The bathroom is downstairs so parents should ensure that their children do not run into the kitchen or up the stairs with wet feet, to avoid slipping (bathmats are provided in the bathroom). As at home, babies must not be left unattended on the changing table in the twin bedroom. Outside
Blackcurrant sits slightly apart from the main courtyard areas and the other properties, at the top of the drive into The Steadings. A gate from the side of the property leads into the enclosed private garden with its swing and slide. There is also a low door from here into the storage room under the house, ideal for bikes, roof boxes, etc - but also a popular ‘den' for slightly older children! Around the corner from Blackcurrant (just a few yards) is the parking area and then the main courtyard and grassy play area, shared by all the properties. This area is completely fenced and gated so is very safe; guests are only permitted to drive in to drop off and pick up. The rest of the time, cars are left in the gravel parking area outside the fence so the play area is completely safe. The owners have provided swings, slides and a play house for little ones and older children and there is even a tree house belonging to the owners children close to the pool (the ladder can be removed to avoid curious little people trying to climb up if required).
Off the courtyard is the enclosed and gated pool area, where the pool is heated to 27/28 degrees and there is a separate toddler pool (the pool is open from May - Oct). The main pool also has Roman steps into the shallow end for tots who are finding their feet in the ‘grown up' pool. Close to this area is the playbarn with table tennis, table football, toddler trampoline, Little Tikes cars, bikes, etc. This area is perfect for burning off steam on rainy days or for older children to congregate in the evenings. Behind here are the owner's paddocks and horses, where little ones are welcome to help with feeding at around 5pm, if they're not already busy with their own ‘nosebag'! Across the top of the drive from Blackcurrant is an extra little ‘secret garden' area with trees and a bench (accessible from the courtyard). It's a popular spot for hide and seek or for story time before bed! Garden furniture and a BBQ are provided at each property. Parent Points: Small children may require help to climb the 3 steps up to the front door of Blackcurrant. Access from the house to the communal play and pool areas is up the drive and across the parking area (just a few yards). Some supervision will be required in case other guests are leaving / arriving in their cars. Only the other guests use this lane and parking area so it is very quiet. For the children...
The whole property has been kitted out with young children in mind, from the toys and bikes in the playbarn to the separate toddler pool to the host of baby and toddler equipment. There are also bikes available for hire for 40 Euros per week or 8 Euros per day. Sandra will even dry towels or children's bedding in her tumble dryers if needed! And Beyond...
There is so much to see and do within easy reach of The Steadings that you'll never be bored! Immediately behind the property is the Camors forest, part of the national forest network. A gated path from behind the pool area gives access straight into the forest and to the numerous walks - many suitable for bikes or buggies and all of varying length. Also within walking distance is a forest adventure park with zip wires and rope bridges for older children, as well as a toddler play area. The village is close by and the busy market towns of Baud (3km) and Pluvigner (7km) are just a short drive away. A good selection of restaurants, shops and supermarkets can be found in both. There are pony rides within approx. 3-4 miles. The lovely medieval towns of Vannes and Auray are within 20 minutes drive and the beaches of Southern Brittany - from the chic Carnac to the surfer's paradise of Quiberon - are only approx. 25 mins away. The local markets are full of character and colour and food lovers will be spoilt for choice! For golfers there several courses in under an hour's drive and for boating or fishing enthusiasts (fishing lakes nearby), the owners can accommodate equipment storage in their safely locked barn (outside the courtyard area so beyond the reach of little ones).
